Trail Overview
The Lost Dog Wash Trail is a 4.2-mile out-and-back route with about 410 feet of elevation gain, making it perfect for beginner to moderate-level hikers. Typically completed in around 1 hour and 40 minutes, the trail winds through classic Sonoran Desert landscapes — from towering saguaro cacti to vibrant creosote bushes and the occasional desert wildlife sighting.
The trail is part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, one of the largest urban preserves in the United States, covering over 30,500 acres. The preserve’s mission focuses on protecting the desert environment while providing public access to enjoy its natural beauty.
A Little History
The name “Lost Dog Wash” supposedly originates from early settlers or ranchers losing their dogs in the expansive desert landscape. The area was later developed into a protected recreation zone to ensure the preservation of its delicate ecosystem while offering the public a chance to experience Arizona’s desert beauty firsthand.
